((ooc: This quest is set in parallel with 'Friends And Daemons', which means Kothar, Dusty and Emilie are out.))
Jessica looked around the Poke-Nursery in wonder.
It was huge!
Definitely bigger than it looked from the outside.
And all those creatures just wandering around.
It was chaotic, at best!
She walked slowly over to a desk where an old woman was sitting, and cleared her throat.
The woman looked up at her.
"Yes? Are you here to collect or drop off?"
"Um... Collect, I think... I got a message telling me to come here and get a starter..."
"Ah, a new one!" The woman seemed almost fascinated. "Name, race?"
"Jessica Rose, human"
Race?
That wasn't usually a question she needed to answer.
"Any powers?"
Jessica shook her head, thought for a moment, then added
"Do biotics count?"
"They do, yes. Here, you'll need this."
The woman handed her a necklace with a sealing pendant on as she typed away on the keyboard in front of her, and scrolled down a lot.
"Ah, here you are!" She said, eventually. She narrowed her eyes at the screen a little. "Interesting..."
"What?"
"Not many people get given a Ditto..." She sighed. "Follow me"
Jessica was led through the nursery, weaving and winding between pens and shelves which contained some kind of red and white capsules.
Eventually, they came to a pen which was entirely full of squishy-looking pink blobs, which all seemed to be changing their shapes, trying to become other creatures they could see.
The woman turned to Jessica.
"Pick one"
"Excuse me?"
"Go in and choose one. When you've chosen, toss this at the one you want." She handed Jessica one of the red and white capsules.
"What is it?"
"It's called a Pokeball."
A little warily, Jessica climbed over the side of the pen and walked among the blobs.
All of them seemed to be trying to impress her by transforming into other creatures, except for one.
It was sitting -or standing, she couldn't really tell- in a corner of the pen, alone, with its back to her.
Jessica crossed the pen towards it, and touched its back.
Unlike the others, this one was blue, and it turned to look at her with sad eyes.
"You" she said, softly "I choose you"
The ditto seemed to brighten up a little as Jessica held the Pokeball out to it.
It extended one section of itself like an arm and touched the ball, whereupon it was engulfed in red light and disappeared into the capsule.
She made her way back out of the pen.
"You'd best take good care of that one" the woman told her, sternly "these others here don't treat it too well"
Jessica nodded.
"Now, are you a satchel, duffel or a backpack girl?" The woman asked, leading Jessica to another section of the nursery.
"Backpack" she replied, a little absentmindedly.
The woman took a backpack off the wall and checked its contents.
"Five Pokeballs, three potions, one Pokedex, one X-Transceiver and a world map." She zipped up the bag and handed it to Jessica, who slung it over her shoulder. "I see you've already been given the right belt." She noted. "Is there anything else you require?"
Jessica looked at the list in her hand.
"Oh, actually there is... Apparently I need a complete set of badges from all regions?"
The woman raised her eyebrows, but nodded, before rummaging around in several drawers, collecting a different-looking case from each. She came back with six cases in her hands, and opened each one in turn so Jessica could see eight shining badges in each one before she handed them over.
Jessica put them carefully into her backpack.
"Alright" the woman smiled "you're all set! I'd suggest taking the five empty Pokeballs out of your bag and attaching them to your belt before you get there. You never know when you might need quick access to one."
"Thanks" Jessica said as she was led back to the door.
"Good luck" the woman smiled.
Jessica stood in the portal room, her new Pokemon in its ball in her hand, the five empty ones on her belt, the pink watch-like X-Transceiver on her wrist.
She stared at the ball in her hand, contemplating.
She'd been told to wait for her companion before setting off.
Apparently she was on a relic hunt.
Her partner would be given the list.
Perhaps this was a 'don't split up' tactic.
She attached the ball to her belt and folded her arms across her stomach, waiting.
