It was Jude's first quest. The Quest brief was simple. 'An associate needs a dragon, alive. Questers responding to this notice will capture one for them. Start on Discworld.' It was the only simple quest up that day, though Jude could not understand for the life of him why it would be simple. Now he was standing outside the gates of a large city, at night. He had called and called out to the watchroom above the gate, but it rather seemed that the guards were all asleep and he'd have to wait til morning. All around him was a very worrying slum indeed, but this was his kind of place. He held himself like a king and looked at people as though he might tear their throat out at any moment, and most of them seemed to decide he wasn't worth the bother. Which was good, because it was mostly show. Still he was doing OK. Jude was a little cold though, it must be winter on this world. He rather hoped someone who knew the place better might show up for the Quest soon, so they could show him how to get inside and find somewhere to stay.

Nabarl had been following the guy for a while now. It struck him as odd that anyone would wear clothes like that around here. Even more so that he still had them...
"Hell" he thought to himself "The only reason I still have my boots is that they can't catch me."
Then another thought occured to him. And, with a little smirk, he released his bindings.
"You may wish to rethink your clothing in future. The folk in the shadows to your right would steal rags stained by more blood than your body could hope to hold."

Jude blinked. There was something odd about the guy. 'I was told this is regulation gear for this world. Got it out of the costume cupboard. My own clothes would have caused confusion.' He glanced down at the suit, which was worn and, by the standards of his world, deeply old-fashioned. It didn't look like anything he would ever have stolen. 'Am I going to be working with you?'

Well, that confirms he's another off worlder... But, costumes? Working? Sounds like there's more to this than just someone else getting trapped. Should I play along, or get the full story? Decisions, decisions...
"Look, I'm not sure entirely what's going on. But I've been trapped here for a few months, and I'm desperate. So, if you can get me off this rock, then, yes, I suppose we will be working together. However, might I suggest we get inside the Walls? These places can get a mite unsavoury after dark. And you might stand a chance of blending in when we do."

'I have a lot of questions, but get me inside the walls and I'll give you any help I can.' Jude smiled nervously. Was this person not QA? An alien? If the latter, they were going to be very disappointed. According to the world file, this place had not even the pathetic excuse for space flight his own had had.

"Getting you inside the walls will be no problem."
Nabarl glanced from side to side. The shadows he had warned the stranger about were, as he expected, actually empty. With a quick glance to check there wasn't anyone actually patrolling the walls, Nabarl flexed his wings, and left the ground.
"When we begin flying, you may want to hold onto something. I would recommend you avoid my shoulders. I would prefer not to crash."

Jude stared. In his short time with the QA, he had met vampires, elves, even hobbits. Bipedal apes with extra bits, like Star Trek aliens. He was not entirely ready for this. After a moment, he felt able to speak: 'You can fly? I hate to ask, I am sure you know what you're doing, but is that safe? You've done it before? I do weigh a good 130, 140 pounds.'

"For the short distance we need to go? That weight won't be a problem. And I haven't flown anyone over a wall. However, I have flown a 200lb man twice the distance at around the same height. As long as you don't interfere with my wings, we'll be fine."
Nabarl wouldn't even need to shift. They weren't far from the wall, and they weren't ridiculously high up. So long as this guy had a decent grip, this would be easy.

Jude realised something else, and worry flickered in his eyes. 'Do they have many people who look like me on your world- Well, never mind, I probably won't be just like humans from your world anyway. I'll trust you. Just don't drop me.' He set his hands firmly on Nabarl's shoulders, with the trained grip of a soldier or athlete. To him at least, it felt steady as a rock, and he began to feel better.

Nabarl felt the man grip hard on his shoulders. It was comforting to know that dropping him would be by choice if it did happen. However, he'd hoped the man would grip him by the waist. It might be less secure, but at least his arms would be further from his wings...
"We have many Beor... No, humans. That word would be meaningless to you." Nabarl was uncomfortable saying it, but he had realised in the weeks or months he'd been trapped here that the name he knew was not what they preferred out here. "Regardless, we have many of your kind in my homeworld. Now, hold on tight..." Nabarl proceeded to take off.
