The sun was up, the city was awake and Valerie was practically glowing with energy. She and Lexi had spent what remained of the night, which was about three hours, in the middle of a large park. They'd decided turning up at a hotel that late with Experiment Four in tow would be a particularly bad idea, but they needed rest. They'd been on their feet all day, and it had been a long one, and eaten nothing. Lexi was fine for now, but using so many of her different functions for so long had drained Valerie's reserves, especially during the night when she couldn't absorb sunlight to help replenish what she was using. Still, she was recharged and ready to go now. The only problem was that they didn't have a clue where to begin. There were no more trails to follow, nothing to track. It was not the best way to start the day. "Maybe we should head back to the lab, start from there and see what we can find?" Lexi suggested, and since she didn't have a better idea Valerie agreed. Besides, if they went all the way back to the lab, they might as well go to the portal and send Four through to HQ.

DG and Katara looked in through the one-way window, unaware that the white coats on the other side were feeling a terrible sense of irony at being the ones inside while unseen eyes undoubtedly watched. "So how do you want to play this?" Katara asked, affectionately toying with one of her guns. DG had a malicious smile on her face. "This is detention cell E71G." She informed her new friend. "There's plant life in the walls and floor." Katara looked at her with interest before turning back to the window, a cunning smirk on her face.

Ani walked quickly down the corridor, passing two women looking in at a bunch of people in white coats. They all greeted each other pleasantly enough and Ani was about to move on when a thought struck her. She turned back to the pair. She had to ask. "Sorry, but are they the humans who created all those creatures?" "Is everyone on this one?" The one playing with her gun asked. "Oh, no. I'm just keeping an eye on the Experiments. I'm not chasing them down or anything." "Who're you?" "Ani. You?" "Katara. This is Dayana, but everyone calls her DG." Ani nodded. "Pleased to meet you, Ani." Smiled DG. "Now, if you'll excuse us we need to deal with these... People." Ani turned to go, but turned back to the window for one last look. "Give them the hell they deserve." She said, before walking away.

By the time Chiyo arrived at her post Ani was already there. "Sorry, have you been here for ages?" "Not long." The girl replied. "Got held up by officials wanting to know where I was going and what I was doing and so on." "Interfering dunghoppers, the lot of them." Ani scowled. "The Hub has definitely seen better days." Chiyo agreed. "How're our furry, scaley and slimy friends this morning?" "Exhausted." The silvery voice replied, indicating the eight sleeping creatures behind the glass. "Easy job for now then." Chiyo said with a smile.

Jessica paced, agitated. She did not like being stuck in this meeting room. It was small. It had no windows. Claustrophobia was creeping in. She had to get out and do something. "Jessica?" Said a quiet voice from the other side of the room. She looked up to see Emilie watching her. "Oh, Emilie. Sorry. What's on your mind?" "Yours." The girl replied, never breaking eye contact. "Mind reader, remember?" "Yes. Sorry. Forgot. I'll try not to think so loud." Emilie rolled her eyes, stood up and took hold of Jessica's hand. "Come on. We may need to be around HQ, but we don't have to stay in here." The official was about to object, but Emilie silenced him with a wave of her hand and a sharp glare. She and Jessica then proceeded out of the door and down the hall.
"Thanks." Jessica said quietly four corridors and two flights of stairs later. "Don't mention it." Emilie smiled back.

Meghan and Six stopped at the end of the long concrete corridor. There was nowhere else to go, it was just the corridor and the stairs back up to the desert outside. A hand made of solid rock pushed them both forwards through the wall and into a solid concrete cell. But when they turned to look the wall they'd come through was whole and very, very solid. This was not good. Not good at all. "Are you alright?" Meghan asked as soon as it looked like they were alone. Six shook its head, which looked awkward, and started trembling, so she put an arm around its shaggy mane and stroked it as she spoke quietly and calmly. "Hush, it's okay. We're going to be okay." And she honestly believed it. "Do you think you can do that teleport thing again? Going from one place to another without really moving, I mean." Six shook its head again and curled up, clearly scared and confused. "It's okay, don't worry. It's not your fault. We'll wait a bit and see what happens. My friends will come for us, I promise." "Friends?" It asked in the same tone as before. Meghan nodded. "Friends are good, friends help." "Help?" She nodded again. "So don't worry. My friends are coming."

"What's going on?" Jessica asked, as she and Emilie came across a large group of questers, officials and all sorts of other staff members standing around a window. She could tell from the way the people inside were paying the crowd absolutely no attention that, while she could see in, they couldn't see out. "Interrogation." Whispered a quester beside them, an elf girl with a bladed staff that had a red orb in the other end. "Xani." The elf added as Jessica gave her a look. "Jessica." She replied "And this is Emilie." Emilie and Xani nodded an acknowledgement at each other. "Who are we interrogating?" Jessica asked eventually. Emilie frowned. She couldn't hear what was going on inside the room. She recognised the people, of course, but she wanted to know what was happening. Part of her wanted in on the fun. "The scientists, but I can't hear them..." she admitted. It was strange not to know what was happening. "Rumour has it these shemlen are responsible for twelve creatures that escaped and rampaged around a city." Xani explained. "Shemlen?" Jessica asked. "Humans." Xani replied. Jessica nodded her understanding. "How many people are involved in this creature quest?" Emilie wondered aloud. "Us two, you were with two others," Jessica said beginning to count "so that's four. Three went after the world-jumper, that's seven..." "There are two others keeping an eye on the creatures that have been brought back here." "So nine?" Emilie asked, a little astounded. "That's a lot more than usual..." Some of the others grew bored with watching the interrogation and moved off, so the three shuffled closer to see what was going on properly.

DG had formed a chair of roots and vines that rose up from the floor of the cell, and a kind of divider wall that separated the white coats from the chair. One by one they were released and sat in the chair. Katara looked the more violent of the two, and she tended to have something against humans, though she had yet to explain why, so she was doing the interrogating. DG stood back and watched, controlling the roots and vines, occasionally having one produce a brutal-looking thorn. It was mostly to scare, but it was effective when used. These people were scientists, they weren't trained for anything like this. The room was soundproof, thought-proof and magic-proof, after all it was a cell and usually housed more powerful beings than standard humans. All the same, it meant nobody was getting in or out until Katara was done. Even DG worried a little about this, but was smart enough to say nothing. Katara was having a particularly hard time with the second-in-command, as he seemed to be in charge since Dr Stein had been locked in solitary confinement. He kept leaning forward and spitting, regardless of the fact that his wrists and ankles were held fast to the chair by thick vines. Eventually even DG had had enough and sent a thorny vine around his neck, pinning him to the back of the chair. "She's not really a violent girl," Katara said, a menacingly threatening tone to her voice "but you've pissed her off. Struggle and I have no doubt those thorns will draw blood. Now, I'll let you in on a secret. Ordinarily, people like us don't deal with people in these cells, which means that you lot are extra work, time and effort on our part. In light of that, let me make one thing abundantly clear to you and your colleagues: Nobody cares how we deal with you. If you do not start showing respect," and here she flipped the blade out on the gun in her hand, which came within a hair's breadth of his eye "I will not hesitate to kill you and move on to one of your friends."

"I've never seen DG like this..." Emilie said, quiet and worried and pointing out which of the two women she was talking about. "Kat I understand, but Deej? This quest must really be getting to her." "She looks dark." Jessica observed. "What do you mean?" Xani asked. "The look in her eyes." The others gave her slightly blank looks so she set about explaining what she meant. "Okay, look at the other. I don't need to read her file to know she's killed before and she's willing to do it again. I can see it in her eyes. They're cold, dark, steely. Now, look at your friend. She may not entirely like what she's a part of, but there's a dark look creeping into her eyes too. She may not have killed before, and if she has it certainly wasn't an unarmed civilian tied to a chair, but she's seriously considering it now. It's a dangerous clifftop your friend's standing on, and she looks almost ready to jump." Xani looked from Jessica to the interrogators and back again, an amazed expression on her face. "How do you do that? How can you know things like that?" "Experience." Jessica replied simply. "I've seen it before." Xani kept asking and Jessica kept answering, but Emilie wasn't entirely paying attention. She was listening fervently to Jessica's mind, both the conscious and the subconscious. Memories swirled around like seals in the sea, and Emilie understood what was going on. Jessica, deep in the back of her mind, was reliving things she didn't want to think about and Emilie found herself trapped in an infinite playback of awful images and sounds and jagged memories. It was not a place anybody should ever have been in, and her heart went out to her new friend. She had not had a pleasant life, and had willingly stepped off the edge of the cliff DG was now on.

The portal room was closed again, and it was disrupting the timetable. Emilie had been called to aid the movement of the experiment from portal room to holding, since she seemed to be the only mind reader in the Hub not doing anything particularly important. She walked Experiment Four through the hallways and corridors of HQ, to many concerned and curious looks, and came across Ani and Chiyo. "You must be the ones keeping an eye on them." She decided with a smile after introductions had been made. "This is Four." "How many are left?" Ani asked. "Three, plus the world-jumper." Emilie replied, leading Four into the room to join the others. "Which ones?" Chiyo asked once the girl had returned. She'd been thumbing through the file earlier in the day, but could barely identify the ones they already had. "One, Eight and Eleven. Six is the jumper." "The file says that One is mostly mouse. Why do all experiments seem to start on rodents?" "No idea, but it's going to be difficult to find if it's mouse-sized..." Ani said, a worried note in her voice. It was just then that a messenger skidded around the corner, tripped over his own tentacles and rolled impressively to end up a squelchy tangled mess at Emilie's feet. The three Questers helped him up and dusted him down, and once he'd got his breath back and worked out which one he was meant to be talking to he turned to Emilie. "You are required in the portal archives." He said firmly. "The portal archives?" Chiyo said with wonder. "Are they bringing back the scrolls?" She seemed almost excited by this idea. The messenger shrugged four of his seven arms. Or were they legs? "Scrolls?" Ani asked. Emilie didn't listen to any more of their conversation as she followed the unfortunate messenger to the portal archives.
