"Got them!" Emilie said excitedly. Jessica had lost count of how many worlds they'd travelled to now, but had she asked the girl she'd have learned they were on number five thousand seven hundred and thirty six. Not bad, all things considered. They did, after all, have portal scrolls for several thousand worlds in their bags, and who knew how many more waiting for them in the archive. "Where are they?" "Further away than I'd like..." "How far, Emilie?" "Two hundred and fifty nine and a third miles east, if we could go in a straight line." Jessica stood and stared at her. This could be a problem.

Katara raised a disbelieving eyebrow. "They're seriously asking for my help? Not ordering, not commissioning, asking?" DG nodded. "I know. Maybe they hope you'll see it as an olive branch or something." "What's an olive branch?" "Like a peace offering." Katara considered this idea for a moment. "Surely they have other ways of getting around, why do they need mine?" "C'mon, Kat, it's just sitting in storage anyway." "Only because they won't let me take her out." DG sighed. If she was honest, and she usually was, Katara's reluctance was understandable. Her ship, or whatever it was, was probably her only link to her homeworld. It would take a lot to put it in someone else's hands. "Well, it's up to you. Em and Jessica need something fast, durable and big enough to get them all back in one piece. Yours is definitely the best match. Apparently Meghan and Six are surrounded and Em can't work out what they're surrounded by." It was sneaky, but if DG knew Kat at all, it was the push needed to get her to help. "Fine, fine! But I'm delivering her to them. At least that way Em will know how to steer her properly." "I'm sure that'll be fine." DG nodded. "That was mean, you know." Katara muttered as the pair left her workshop. "I know..." DG sighed apologetically.

Twenty minutes later Katara appeared in a flash of parchment steering the most incredible airship Emilie had ever seen. She and Jessica simply stood and gawped. It was made almost entirely of wood, with brass bands keeping it together and brass fittings that gleamed like gold in the sunlight. Huge leather wings, powered by steam and running on clockwork, beat heavily against the air and kept it up. A great canvas sail was clearly the steering mechanism. As they watched Katara bring it in to land they were amazed to see four brass panels on the base open and large steel wheels descend to touch down on the ground. In beautiful gold lettering towards the bow of the ship, and it was certainly a ship, was written 'Æthersoul'. 'Her name...' thought both Emilie and Jessica, though entirely independently of each other. Katara descended the gangplank, a scroll clutched in her fist. "That's certainly one way to make an entrance." Jessica noted, still staring at Æthersoul, which was no bigger than about half the average canal boat, though it was somewhat wider. "She's only a kind of life boat. The ship she came from was a true beauty." Katara sighed almost wistfully. "She's amazing..." Emilie said quietly. "I'll take really good care of her, I promise, and I won't let anyone use the lever that does that thing..." "Found everything you need in my head?" Katara asked with a slightly sad smile. Emilie nodded. "We'll bring it and them back safe and sound, don't worry." Jessica said reassuringly as she strode up the gangplank and onto the deck. Katara nodded, put a hand on the side and said "She gets a little shakey sometimes, just bear with her. If she starts listing you'll want to-" "-I know," Emilie interjected "I can hear it all. She'll be fine, Kat, I promise." Katara sighed, nodded again, took one last look at her little airship and read her scroll. There was a rustle like parchment in the wind behind Emilie as she climbed aboard, and Katara was gone. "I trust you know what you're doing." Jessica said, stepping aside and allowing Emilie to take the wheel. It was surrounded by buttons and levers and all sorts, and Jessica couldn't even fathom where to start. "I always know." Emilie replied with a confident smile as she pushed a button, pulled a lever and span the wheel and the ship began its ascent into the sky.

Meghan rammed her fist against the wall again, and again all that happened was she hurt her hand. She sighed and slumped into a corner, sliding down the wall until she was sitting, legs stretched out towards Six. A sudden thought struck her then, as she stared at the solid concrete ceiling. "Question," she said, wondering whether or not Six's sentience meant it was also intelligent. "I can see you, and you can see me, right?" Six nodded its awkward head. "And we're in a small, empty room made of solid concrete, ceiling and all, right?" Again, Six nodded its head, but there was a look of interest in its eyes now that hadn't been there a moment ago. "So if we're in an empty, solid room, and we can see perfectly fine, where's the light coming from?" Six looked a little startled, then turned its head so it could see all around it. They both looked up at the bare concrete ceiling and then at each other. Realisation dawned just a little on Six's face and Meghan raised her eyebrows with a half smile. Meghan stood up again and stretched her arms up as far as they would go, but she wasn't tall enough. Then, very suddenly, she began rising. Six had crouched and got under her and was standing as a quadruped. Putting its front legs against the wall it began to stand on only its back legs, inching Meghan higher. Then she found it. A space that looked solid from the ground but wasn't. "I'm going to jump a bit. This may hurt." She said softly, hoping she didn't accidently injure the poor creature whose head she was standing on. "You... Not... Heavy." Six replied, and something in Meghan stirred. Language was clearly very difficult for it, but it had tried to reassure her. Now she just had to hope she didn't fail miserably and fall, that horn would not make for a pleasant landing.

((Ooc: I remember having ideas as to how this was going to go, but sadly I don't think I ever wrote them down... So I'm just going to continue it and see what happens...))
Experiment Eleven didn't take long to find in the end. It had built a confused sort of web-nest in a tree on the edge of the forest, and Valerie pointed out the fascinating thought that this strange web-nest creation was probably the only one in existence as Lexi cut it down, saying "not anymore" quite cheerfully. Now, of course, they had to find Experiment One, and with no clues to go on, the pair were stuck. Eventually, Valerie got in touch with HQ, who suggested a swap in teams, so they dejectedly trudged back to the portal.

Valerie was waiting patiently in the portal room as Katara and DG arrived to take over creature catching. "Just this one left?" Katara asked. "Correct. Experiment One is the final creature on this world." Valerie confirmed. "Don't worry," DG smiled, putting a hand on Valerie's shoulder as the portal whirled to life "we'll find it." With that, the pair stepped through and Valerie was left alone, considering the idea that she should probably find Lexi, who had been told upon arrival that the scientists were being held, and that Dr Stein was in solitary confinement. Even without her emotions, the smile that played across Lexi's face had set Valerie on edge.

((Ooc: wow, look at the time fly...))
Once back on-world, DG and Katara headed for what had been the lab. It was exactly as DG had expected, given that they'd left before the plants had finished their work. One large tree stood over the spot that had been the main entrance. "All yours," Katara said with a smile, gesturing to the tree. DG placed a hand on the trunk and listened. The tree felt out with its roots, asking her question: where was Experiment One? The question radiated out in circles around each plant that asked, until eventually there was a response.
