"Can you calculate the answers to problems on my math tests if I send them to you while I'm taking it and tell me the answers?" Evelyn asked, "because that would be awesome."

"Depends on the questions" Emilie replied "I'm not exactly a supercomputer, I just don't forget anything." She thought about this for a moment. 'Tell you what though, if I can get a look at the answers before you take them I can memorise them and send them to you. I'd only need to see them for a couple of seconds each...' She projected in case anyone was listening in. "Oh, I'm not coming home for a while today, Nathan wants to hang out and I figure I've gotta be friendly." She added, remembering their conversation in the hall earlier.

"Alright you do that," Evelyn said, "I'm gonna see what Staci is doing, she said she wanted to show me where the rock was so I could meet her there tomorrow."
Evelyn found Staci and her friends outside the school, just off the property smoking cigarettes and looking alternative together. When she saw Evelyn, Staci waved excitedly. "Guys this is Eva, the chick from the bathroom I was telling you about, she's like new and stuff so I invited her to join us at the rock tomorrow. Don't worry, she's chill," Staci said with a wink at the end. "Sup Eva, I'm Rex, as in T-Rex as in dinosaurs," a guy with a shaggy brown flow said, flicking his hair. "I'm Clancy," a girl with rainbow hair who wasn't quite properly dressed for school said, sticking her hand out to shake. Evelyn shook it. "And that's Paul and Drew," Staci said, pointing to two who were in a deep discussion and hadn't noticed Evelyn's presence yet. "Nice to meet you guys," Evelyn said, "I was so worried I wasn't gonna find people who were into this stuff around here. My neighborhood seems pretty cookie cutter billboard style." "Yeah don't worry we've gotcha covered," Rex said, "I was at your party the other night, it was sick. I only remember like half of it." "Haha I remember almost none of it," Evelyn lied, "I'm glad you had fun." "You should make that like a regular thing." Clancy said, "I couldn't go, I was sick." "Sorry to hear that, I hope you're feeling better," Evelyn said.

Emilie met Nathan by the front door soon after school had ended. "Hey, Ellie." He smiled, tapping her on the shoulder to make sure she knew he was there. "C'mon, I'm taking you to meet the gang."
A few minutes later Emilie was stood outside the front gates with a group of students who could only be the geeks of the school. "So you're the herbology partner," said a boy in the thickest-rimmed glasses Emilie had ever seen, "I'm Archie, this is Felix, Rose and Peter." Emilie shook hands with all the boys, but Rose gave her a friendly hug. "You have no idea how much I need another girl in this group!" "Hey!" Felix, the truly camp member of the group, protested instantly as they started walking. Apparently they were headed for the group's favourite cafe. "Fee, you're not a girl. Get over it." Peter sighed. He looked the calmest. Felix tossed his head and huffed, all melodramatic. Welcome to chess club. Do you play? Peter signed. Emilie nodded. "I haven't played in ages though." She added hesitantly. "And I can lip-read, you don't need to sign to me." "Yeah, but the others don't sign, so we can have secret conversations." He grinned, speaking softly while the others bickered ahead. 'If you only knew...' She thought, but she kept it to herself.
Half an hour later the six of them were set up in the cafe with milkshakes, except for Nathan who was lactose intolerant and had a pint of orange squash instead, and a chessboard. It was winner-stays-on, and Archie and Felix were up first. Emilie wasn't sure if this was going to be an interesting afternoon, or an incredibly boring one.

Evelyn looked at 'the rock.' It was literally just a big rock. There was nothing special about it other than the fact that it was large enough for about seven people to sit on. Drew had pulled a little box out of his backpack and was passing around assorted drugs. Evelyn silently prayed to herself that none of them would actually effect her and hoped that if her eyes changed color or her fangs slid out she could blame it on the others being high and hallucinating. She was still feeling buzzed from all the new blood in her body and her eyes still looked a bit strange, if that increased too much the others would definitely notice. She wanted to choose the drug that would effect her the least, but she was amazed with how much drugs had changed in the past decades, she recognized almost none of them. When I was a kid... she thought to herself.
Marco had never learned to drive and having been left with the car keys and information regarding the others' whereabouts he was standing in front of the car. He sighed and got in, giving the manual transmission a death glare. It was always harder when they were manual. He closed his eyes and tried to remember the spell he would use for this. He had just decided what he was going to do when someone knocked on the window, making him jump. The girl from his gym class who he had asked to hang out was standing there. "Oh, hey Katie," he said, rolling down the window. "Sweet ride, can I jump in?" Katie asked, walking to the passenger side and letting herself in before he could say anything. He had completely forgotten that he had asked her to hang out. "So where are we headed to?" Katie asked, twisting to put her backpack in the back seat. "I actually have no idea," Marco said, "I'm not really sure what's where." "OMG I'm taking you to the Shake Place, it's got amazing french fries," Katie said, "you start driving I'll give you directions." She buckled her seatbelt and looked at him expectantly. Marco swallowed and recited a spell silently, hoping that she wouldn't notice that he wasn't actually shifting the gears. As an afterthought he put her under a glamor so that she definitely wouldn't notice. He put the car in reverse and pulled out of the parking lot, hoping for the best.

Chess should have been a difficult game, even though she knew the rules. Emilie knew this. But it was so hard not to listen to what her opponents were thinking that she eventually gave up trying. This was why she only played tactical games against other mind readers. It made them fairer. Of course, sometimes they just played the entire game in their heads, which mainly happened when nobody had a board... Or pieces... Or cards... She tried not to beat them all too badly. Felix was surprisingly good, and would definitely have beaten her hands down if she hadn't heard every strategy and tactic in his head.
By closing time Emilie was the clear winner. "You gotta teach me to play like that!" Archie was saying as they left "The way you took down Rose in that last game was awesome!" "It's all about knowing what your opponent is going to do. I just know how to read people is all." Emilie shrugged. "Yeah, but you're scary good!" Rose said excitedly. "I'm secretly telepathic." Emilie replied with a mischievous smile. Everyone paused in silence for one terrifying moment before bursting out laughing.

Marco let out a deep breath of relief as he pulled into a parking spot at the Shake Place. "Wow you're such a great driver," Katie said, "let's go, there's probably going to be a line." "Thanks, okay," Marco said, looking forward to getting some food. The line snaked out of the building. "Don't worry, it moves pretty quickly, especially if you have someone cool to talk to," Katie said, "here, have a menu so you can decide what you want before we get to the register." Marco looked at the piece of paper. "A bacon and eggs milkshake?" He asked, a little disgusted. "Yeah don't get that one," Katie said, "most of the ones that sound gross are, a few are really good, like the candied bacon one, but not all of them. I recommend the fudge ripple mini m&m milkshake." Marco nodded and looked over the menu. He felt a bit of homesickness for his coffee shop but knew he'd be back home soon.

"So what else is there to do around here?" Emilie asked "I mean besides chess at the café." "Sometimes we marathon our favourite TV shows." Archie suggested. "Dude, she's not gonna be able to hear it." Peter scolded. Sorry he signed. "Oh man, sorry Ellz..." Archie said "...It's just, you don't act like how I imagine deaf people to be..." "S'alright, I'm used to it." Emilie shrugged. "Besides, if there's subtitles I don't need to listen. Though maybe someone could describe the music to me? Y'know, like the atmosphere and stuff. It's the subtleties I miss..." "Sure!" Nathan grinned, and the group headed off to Archie's house.
