'Wait for me in Hell' the message had said. Just that. No commands, no weapons list, no warnings or suggestions it would be a good idea to get yourself vaccinated for foreign diseases before leaving.
It was a bit daunting really. Thomas Prompt had expected more, he had expected to be kitted out with a crossbow or a sword for a start, particularly if he was going to make his way into the fiery pits of Hell alone. After the introductory Questing Association classes he had attended he had expected something, maybe he should have gone to the university after all, maybe he wasn't cut out for the road just yet, he probably shouldn't be here, would his Quest leader send him back realising how little experience he had?
Stop agonizing, he chided himself, wait and see, this Quest hadn't be marked highly, it can't be that bad, even if it is in Hell. That was true, as well as the simple message the advert had given him precise coordinates and graded the quest on the QA grading scheme, all of which were under 5/10 for expected difficulty, illness, violence, natural disaster or death - surely that promised it would be clear and relatively safe.
As it turned out, a majority of Questers neglected to use this scheme and that was why he had been drawn to this quest in the first place.
Wait, Thomas calmed himself, he or she will turn up. He looked about him. He wished he hadn't. At least the field he was in appeared to be empty, barren in fact, in every direction; burnt, red, dusty, flat ground for miles. But in the distance he could see the fires where burning. Huge plumbs of smoke billowing up form the horizon, each adding to the thick smog that covered the sky that seemed to swell with a life of it's own above his head. He pulled his eyes away.
Anyway, the portal from HQ had dropped him here, he would just have to wait.
