Evelyn winced. "Nasty," she gagged, "I would rather eat my own arm." She followed Lexi closely, watching the scenery for unsavory creatures. The sooner this was over the happier she would be. It was a good thing Lexi had showed up, since it was clear the contact she had arranged for was not going to be much use (she had been waiting for a few hours by the time Lexi showed up).

"Your own arm?" Lexi laughed. "Can't imagine that'd be pleasant." She paused for a moment, ears almost pricked with curiosity, eyes darting from side to side. They were at the edge of an almost-post-apocalyptic-looking city of some sort, stretching out for miles in either direction. It was impossible to tell how deep it went, but it seemed to go on forever. Puffs of smoke in varying colours spewed from nearly every chimney in sight. "This is where it starts getting dangerous." Lexi said in a hushed tone. "The Witches here don't like us. Vampires, I mean. Something about an old feud dating back millennia. Anyway, the point is be swift, and be silent. If even one catches a glimpse of you, they'll all know. They're weirdly linked like that, it's why they all live in one place. If they see you, run. The door's in the middle of the city, head there if we're separated. Some of it's real, some of it's not, but you can't tell which is which. If you walk through an illusion, they'll see you, so assume everything you see is real." She turned to look at the girl "And for Hell's sake, don't let them catch you." With that, Lexi started walking, quickly and silently, into the city.

Evelyn followed Lexi into the city. The whole thing was a chaotic mess of metal and wood. Colored smoke was everywhere, and Evelyn was lost within minutes. She could only see a few feet in front of her and focused on keeping Lexi's shoes within sight. They managed to get through the city without trouble for all of 15 minutes before an inhuman cry sounded from a nearby building. They had been spotted. Instantly, Evelyn broke into a run. She was fast, faster than Lexi, but had no idea where she was going. A witch appeared out of the smoke in front of her and she ran it through with her sword, not stopping to think for more than a second. Lexi was somewhere behind her, but Evelyn didn't stop moving. She kept running until she found the door. This one was heavy wood and Evelyn knew she couldn't open it on her own. She crouched in the shadows near it and waited for Lexi, silently praying that the other Vampire didn't get herself killed.

Lexi dashed, faster than she would usually go. 'Keep her safe' was all the Voice in her head would say 'Just keep her safe' 'She'd better run fast' She spent a good ten minutes leading the Witches on a wild goose chase around the city, no longer bothering to care what was real and what wasn't, she simply ran through everything. Only when she was sure she'd lost them did she double back to find the girl. If her heart beat it would've been pounding. The only mercy was the fact that she didn't need to breathe. There! There it was! The door! Lexi ran towards it as fast as she could go, but instead of crashing into it when she failed to stop, she went straight through it and into the crouching Vampire on the other side, sending them both sprawling into the dust. Instantly she realised what had happened. "They made a decoy! It's the wrong one!" Half a second and she was on her feet again, grabbing the girl by the arm and running for all she was worth. She'd gone through it. They knew where they were again. The girl was fast, but not fast enough. She clearly hadn't been a Vampire long enough to reach her full speed yet. Either that or she just wasn't using it. 'Worry about it later!' the Voice screamed 'RUN!' Dashing around the streets now, Lexi had to pause for half a second at each crossing to get her bearings. "This way, come on!" Dragging the poor girl behind her, Lexi raced up a street to another crossing. Another heavy wooden door stood right in the center. Inhuman screeches emanated from all around them. Lexi let go of the girl, put her hands on the door, screamed the pass-phrase and pulled the girl through. Safe on the other side, Lexi watched as the door faded back into existence, ensuring their escape from the Witches and into level four.
Lexi sat for a moment, leaning against the door, head in her hands. She looked up at Evelyn, exhausted, and nodded. "We should be safe here for a while. There are Vampires on level four. We won't stick out. We'll be ok. Just beware the Demons and watch out for shape-shifters." She sighed deeply. Though she didn't need to breathe, it gave her a calming sensation. "I've never seen them quite like that before... Must remember to look into it." She said this more to herself than Evelyn.

Evelyn didn't breathe heavily, something that even now took some getting used to. Once upon a time just running up a staircase would have winded her, but now she could run miles with little fatigue. She looked around the fourth level. Much like the previous three, it seemed to have no sky, just darkness. The ground here was blood-red stone that had been worn smooth over time, and it was almost completely silent. She looked at the other Vampire. Lexi looked exhausted, and Evelyn wondered just how far out of her way she had detoured. "We should probably get moving." Evelyn said. She didn't like how quiet it was and would rather not stay in the same place longer than she had to. As Lexi had pointed out earlier, from here on it would just get more and more dangerous.

Lexi nodded her agreement and stood up. "This way" she said, as she started walking off at an angle to the right. "Many of the people down here are perfectly harmless. Well, to us at least. They talk, they'll reason. Some are even in perpetually good moods" she smiled, thinking back to times when she had encountered a group of young shape-shiters playing, testing themselves to see how different they could become. "However, some are less than friendly. Everyone down here thinks they're the biggest bad the world has ever seen, and most of them are wrong. You get the occasional one who really is as powerful as they claim they are, but they get brought down a notch or two fairly swiftly once they step out of line." Lexi shook her head, again thinking back to previous times "They'll all know you as a Vampire, that's fairly obvious, and most won't tell the difference, but the Vampires down here know everyone. If, by some horrible trick of fate, we come across the wrong ones... Well, let's just say some of them aren't too fond of outsiders..." Lexi sighed "They won't kill you, but they'll make it hurt... Level six Vampires are so much more accommodating..."

Evelyn nodded. "Okay, so we just avoid people and hope that anyone we happen to run into is friendly? Sounds like a plan."

Lexi laughed. "Something like that. If we get into serious trouble though, I have contacts here always willing to provide a safe-house." She smiled "It's a long way to the next gate. The higher levels are a lot bigger."

Evelyn sighed. She had hoped this would be over quickly, but it didn't look like that was going to happen. "How long do you suppose it will take us to reach the next door at the pace we've been keeping?"

Lexi sighed. 'You'd think after nearly a century as a Vampire she'd have learned some patience' the Voice sighed, almost disappointed. Lexi had to agree. "Well, we've made remarkable time so far, though I suspect that's due to the need to escape. But crossing the levels takes time."
