It was the first holiday Emilie had been allowed to take anywhere other than Head Office, and it was exciting. Now that she was eighteen, the Directors had determined she was old enough to be responsible off-world.
After her quest in the dull grey of Limbo, and the years spent staring at the plain walls of HQ, she'd naturally chosen a world rich in vibrant colours, and Oz was certainly that.
Of course, she'd read the stories and learned what she could, but nothing beat actually being in the middle of it.
The portal closed up behind her, and Emilie looked around, excited.
She seemed to be in some kind of old farmhouse, in serious need of repairing. Instantly, she knew where she was.
"Dorothy's house..." she whispered in awe, walking slowly around the room, feeling the walls and running her fingers across the furniture, disturbing the dust.
She pulled her sleeve over her hand and wiped the dust and grime off a window pane.
Outside was an explosion of colour, and without a second thought Emilie dashed out into what appeared to be some kind of town square and just twirled, staring in wonder at her surroundings.
Most of the buildings were shades of blue, and most of the people wore blue clothes, but everything else was just bursts of different colours everywhere, and Emilie could hardly believe her eyes. She'd never seen anything so vibrant outside of her own wardrobe.
'Who is she?'
'Where did she come from?'
'What does she want?'
'How did she get here?'
'When did she arrive?'
'Why is she here?'
Emilie heard the questions start buzzing around her as the people started staring. She was a good foot taller than most of them, but the sheer number was intimidating.
She backed into the house again and shut the door, simply standing facing it for a moment, working out what to do.
