"You can choose," Marco said, moving over on the couch to make room for Emilie when she came downstairs, "I like them all."

"I've never played a video game before..." Emilie admitted, sitting down. "I don't know anything about them..."

"Okay, we'll start out nice and easy," Marco said, standing up to put the disk for MarioKart and handing Emilie a wii remote. "Just hold it like this and pretend it's a steering wheel," he explained, holding out his hands.

Emilie turned the strange device sideways and imagined it was like the steering wheel of Evelyn's new car. "Like this?" She asked, pulling instructions for the controls from Marco's mind.

"Yeah," Marco said, starting the game. He was incredibly impressed with Emilie's skills and also a little bit frustrated when she beat him on Rainbow Road.

"It's a little easier when I can hear you thinking of throwing that blue shell at me." Emilie admitted, putting down her controller about an hour and a half after she'd been given it. She stood up and stretched, yawning. "I'm going to go memorise my new life story and stuff." She said. "If you're not going to do the same, why don't you play the game you've been thinking about for the last half hour? You're already pretty sure I won't want to play, and besides it's a single-player game, right?" She grinned at Marco and went back upstairs to her room before he could reply. Flopping back on her bed, Emilie picked up her QA folder and began flipping through the pages, reading them in more detail. There was a psyche evaluation seven pages in that she was genuinely interested in. Her new persona had apparently decided she was an orphan, but far from keeping to herself and shutting out the world in case everyone else left her too she had reached the conclusion that this meant nobody was legitimately allowed to tell her to 'grow up'. Following this, she now apparently acted younger than she was rather a lot of the time, though was perfectly capable of being a grownup. In fact, judging by the report, the only thing she didn't act was her age. Emilie read the page three times and concluded that the QA had just done a vague evaluation of how she was anyway. "No effort at all." She muttered to herself, turning the page and moving on. There were some interestingly adapted photos of Emilie in her various foster homes, one or two of a scrawny little redhead in ripped clothes sitting in a police station and even a few of her, Evelyn and Marco, though how they'd managed that was beyond her. It occurred to her then that the three of them would need to think of some collective anecdotes if they were meant to have been friends for ages. That's what normal friends had, wasn't it? Amusing stories about each other. She, herself, had a few of another girl who lived in the Hub. Her name was Cynthia, and she never remembered any of them because her mind reset every year, memories and all. Emilie reflected on how different her own life had been in comparison with the average earth human. She may have to watch herself very carefully for a while. Tomorrow. Tomorrow she would bring up shared memories and see what the others thought. She could even implant false memories in them so they wouldn't have to remember a story. She'd be the only one who knew they were fake until the end of the quest. Perhaps that was going a bit far... She'd ask them tomorrow. Finally, her entire file committed to memory permanently, Emilie changed and settled down to sleep.

Evelyn woke up thoroughly confused about where she was before remembering the quest. Rolling out of bed she put on a pair of jeans and a black blouse, did her makeup, and, noting that nobody else was awake yet, left a note in the kitchen saying she had gone to get food. Half an hour later she returned with a carful of groceries to find Marco eating a burger for breakfast. "Where did you get that?" She asked, dropping the bags on the counter and starting to unpack them into the fridge and the cabinets. "I made it," Marco said with his mouth full. "Chew your food," Evelyn said, "I'm sure you made it but what did you make it with?" "Magic," Marco said matter of factly. "Yeah, right," Evelyn said, "and how did you manage that? You know as well as I do that even the most powerful magician can't conjure real food out of thin air, that's magic 101." "I made some assorted snacks the other day and left it to be grabbed by future me in a parallel pocket," he explained, "so I don't have to get up to get food when I'm watching tv or otherwise occupied." "You're ridiculous," Evelyn said, rolling her eyes. She made herself a bowl of cereal and sat down next to him. "Are you ready to meet the neighbors?" She asked. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" "Did you actually study your file or did you stay up all night playing video games?" She asked, raising an eyebrow at him knowingly. "Are you suggesting that I'm not prepared? Well I'll have you know, my name is Marc, I'm 17, I turn 18 in December. I like sports and but I'm not just a jock, I'm also into art and want to study Architecture at the University of Arizona, the University of Cincinnati, or Cornell. I get good grades but it's partially because I don't take very hard classes and I take my academics seriously but not too seriously. I'm friendly and outgoing but at the same time I can be shy and quiet. I read the file, did you?" "Yes I read mine, I'm Eva, I'm just gonna go by Ev, I'm also 17 but I turn 18 in March. I'm strong willed and stubborn and teachers don't always like me because I like challenging them on things. I'm a smart but lazy student so my grades could be better. As far as higher education I'm planning to study design at the University of Cincinnati like you, Drexel University, or the Rhode Island School of Design. However, due to my court record I'm also applying to community college as a safety." "Alright," Marco said, finishing his burger, "we're good then."

"You guys ready?" Emilie asked, descending the stairs with a half eaten cereal bar in her hand. "Neighbours to meet and such."

"Yup," Evelyn said, putting her empty bowl in the dishwasher, "how do you propose going about it? Should we just knock on doors or sit on the porch and wait until people walk by or what? I'm down with just about any approach but we should probably figure that out, ya know?"

"Maybe knock on doors? Let them know we're friendly and unlikely to have loud parties at all hours of the day and night." Emilie had read somewhere that irritable neighbours often had problems with students' absurd sleeping hours. Besides which, she could quite clearly hear the woman in the house on the right wondering whether or not the three of them would be the type of neighbours that disrupted the peace. She'd been trying to work it out since she'd gotten up just over an hour ago, and her current bet was on 'yes'. The man living with her -Emilie assumed he was her husband, but she didn't want to go digging through their memories to find out- couldn't care less about the new inhabitants of the house next door, and had spent the last twenty minutes trying to work out what he'd done with his keys the night before. Had she decided to take a look through his recent memories, Emilie would have discovered that he'd left them in the lock on the wrong side of the front door. "I think I'll go by the name 'Ellie'," she told the others "it's pretty close to my name anyway and 'Eleanor' sounds really posh or something... Oh! I had a thought last night!" Emilie suddenly remembered, and she explained her thoughts on shared anecdotes and memories; including the possibility of giving them both false memories for the duration of the quest, though she was pretty sure they wouldn't go for that particular idea.
