"Two things," Evelyn said, "one-yes that's a fabulous idea, Marco and I have a few memories of the two of us but they don't all fit the quest very well. Second-we may have a slight problem because I was planning on being the type of neighbor that disrupts the peace. If you want to figure out who's who and where the drama is with a group of teens throw a loud party and watch them inflate everything out of proportion. I think the walls are soundproof so we'll be good on volume but people coming and going as well as anything lighting related will probably disturb the more unwelcoming neighbors." She stepped outside, letting the other two out before closing and locking the door.

"Like a social experiment." Emilie said, understanding at once. "Hmm, you make a fair point... I suppose I could always shield the house with a perception field if the need arises." Emilie turned right and walked up the path to the house next door. Sure enough, there were the man's keys still in the lock. Emilie shook her head, took one last look at the others and rang the doorbell.
A thin, middle-aged man answered within seconds. He was a tall man, just under six foot, with greying hair that had once been black, brown eyes and a tired face, as though the weight of the world were on his shoulders. "Hello, sir." Emilie said brightly "We're your new neighbours. We thought we should come and introduce ourselves." "Oh. Er... Pleased to meet you." His voice wasn't deep, but it wasn't particularly high either. "I also thought you might like to know that your keys are still in the lock..." Emilie continued pointedly, her eyes darting to the lock and back. The man looked confused for a moment, saw his keys and hurriedly pulled them out of the door and shoved them into his pocket with a small nod of gratitude. "Who is it?" Called a shrill voice from inside. "New neighbours, dear, come and meet them." The man called back. The woman who appeared at the door could only be described as pointy. That isn't to say that she was skeletal, far from it, but she appeared to have very bony joints. Angular would have been the term if her nose hadn't been the most pointy thing about her. This was the type of woman who twitched the curtains to get a better view of her neighbours and spent half her time watching them, just in case they were up to something. Emilie smiled sweetly as she could as she introduced them. "Nice to meet you. My name's Ellie, and this is Marc and Eva. We just moved in next door." "David Green, and this is my wife Mary." The woman nodded curtly. Emilie could sense that Mrs Green had already made up her mind about them, and she didn't need her powers to do it. The five of them talked for a little while about the neighbourhood and how long the Greens had lived here and so on before the three 'teenagers' excused themselves on the basis that they ought to go and introduce themselves to the neighbours on the other side.
"She doesn't like us." Emilie said firmly once they were out of earshot and the Greens' door had closed. She knew the others knew it too, but she felt it had to be said aloud.

"Is it bad that I have the urge to start a neighborhood war with her?" Evelyn asked, "Like leave the windows on her side open when we party and stuff." "As fun as that would be we don't need anyone digging too deep into our backgrounds," Marco pointed out as they approached the next door. This house stuck out because it was blue with orange trim and the only house painted that way. Evelyn knocked on the door and took a step back as a dog started barking loudly. A curvy woman who smelled like cupcakes and rose water opened the door, holding a large tan dog by the collar. "Hello there kids, how can I help you?" She asked with a smile, "Sorry about Scott he's easily excited." "We're your new neighbors, we just wanted to introduce ourselves," Marco explained. "Oh I was just making you guys some welcome brownies, come on in," she said, stepping to the side and waving them in. Evelyn excitedly stepped into the foyer and looked around. The house was full of family pictures, the woman, her husband, the dog, and three kids. "My name is Mrs. Christiansen but you can call me Nora, My husband, Mr. Christiansen, is Frank, my sons are Jerald and Sebastian, and my daughter is Cynthia. They all go to the local high school, I assume y'all will be going there too?" She asked, ushering them into a large kitchen. "Yes, we're all seniors," Evelyn explained, "I'm Eva and these two are Marc and Ellie." "You'll be in the same grade as Sebastian and Cynthia, they're twins, are you triplets?" Nora asked, "You don't look too similar, but kids don't always look like each other or their parents." "No, we're all estranged from our parents," Evelyn said, "it's a long story but we met in a shelter and have stuck together ever since." "Well isn't that brave of you," Nora said, getting them all glasses of water, "good for you guys getting up on your feet and getting a house so young, not many kids these days can do that." They stayed and talked for about fifteen more minutes at which point the brownies were done and Nora packaged them up and wished the three of them good luck on their first day of school. "If you ever need anything just stop by!" She called as they headed back down the driveway. "I like her," Marco said. "Same," Evelyn agreed.

Emilie grinned. "She means it, y'know, about going to her if we need anything. She's anticipating us being friends with her kids and going over there a lot. I could see it plain as day in her head the whole time we were there. Since you told her we were on our own she seems to truly believe she's going to be a kind of adopted mother to us all..." Emilie had to admit this idea did sound a little appealing. Having been taken away from her world as a baby, not even a year old, after her parents became 'collateral damage' in a QA mission, she had no memory of her own mother at all. Even with her perfect memory she couldn't remember a thing about her parents. She didn't even know which variant her Earth was. It hadn't really bothered her; she'd gotten so used to the way her life was that she never really thought about what it might have been like until DG had become a friend and not just her tutor. Then there was Kina, the big sister she'd never had, and Cynthia, the little sister she would always have, and all the others she considered family. But nobody had ever really felt like a mother... Not until Mrs Nora Christiansen. Emilie pulled herself forcibly out of her reverie and asked "Should we say hi to anyone else? Do people talk to neighbours across the street? Or two doors away?"

"Yeah," Marco said, "we should go at least two houses in every direction." They dropped off the brownies at home and made their way to the neighbors next to the Christiansens. Their knock on the door was answered by a tall boy who looked somewhere between 18 and 25 with a disaster of hair and apparently no clothes on save a green robe. Evelyn, knowing Emilie could probably read whatever thoughts scrolled across her mind, threw up her mental guard walls as quickly as she should. "I already know about Jesus," the boy said. "We're not-um, we're your new neighbors," Evelyn said, "we just wanted to introduce ourselves, I'm Eva, this is Ellie, and that's Marc." "Oh, nice, I'm Jake," the boy said, "how old are you guys? are you college kids or high school?" "We're seniors in high school," Marco said, "we're legally estranged though, so we live alone." "Cool," Jake said. The conversation didn't last much longer than that before they excused themselves and he went back inside to continue whatever he had been doing. As soon as they were far enough from the house that there was no way he could hear them, Marco elbowed Evelyn in the side. "Eva and Jaaake, sitting in a tree-ow, that hurt" he said as she punched him in the stomach. "I hate you." She said.

Emilie just laughed at them as they made their way to the house beside the Greens. The doorbell didn't just buzz or ring, it made an elaborate effort to play some kind of tune that no doubt annoyed everyone except the residents. It was answered swiftly by a young girl, no more than seven years old, wearing a pretty dress with sequins on and ribbons in her hair. "Oh, hello." She said, as though she'd been expecting someone else. "Hi." Emilie replied with a smile. The girl's mother appeared at the door and angrily ordered her daughter back to her violin practice, to which the girl went unwillingly. "Well?" She snapped. "What do you want?" "I'm Ellie, this is Eva and Marc. We just moved in a couple of doors down and thought we should introduce ourselves." Emilie explained. "And?" "And..." she continued hesitantly "this is us introducing ourselves..." The woman stared at them in a silence punctured only by a squeaky violin that Emilie was blessed not to be able to hear. Then, very deliberately, she shut the front door with a thud. "Is that normal?" Emilie asked, turning to go back down the pristine path through the immaculate lawn, but there was a shout from the street that interrupted any conversion that may have taken place. "What are you doing?!" The clean-shaven man in the suit looked angry. "Get off my property!" He had started storming towards them. Deciding it was better not to cause any real trouble on their first day in the neighbourhood, they ducked around him and ran back home, shouts of "Trouble-makers!" and far worse echoing behind them. "I suggest staying generally away from them..." Emilie said once they'd reached the relative safety of their own front door. "...At least until we can mess with them properly."

"I want to egg their house," Evelyn decided, "I know it's a horrible thing to do but I really really want to. That and do some hardcore pranking." "As much as I want to do that I would suggest we wait at least a week," Marco said, "then we can vandalize them." "The daughter was cute though," Evelyn said, "shame her parents are such horrible people."

"She's not like her parents," Emilie informed them "and she only plays the violin because they've decided she's going to be a virtuoso of sorts. Olivia is her name, and her parents are Walter and Victoria, but I can't hear a surname from any of them, and we're too far away for me to dig into their memories." She sighed and shook her head slightly. "Over the road? Or go back inside?" She asked, gesturing in both directions as she said them.

"You know what, back inside sounds like a good idea," Marco said, "we should get some rest and prepare for tomorrow, I know that I personally was in a regular Earth high school less than a decade ago and still need an update on it so you two definitely need them." "When I was in high school girls had to wear nice dresses or skirts and boys had to wear suits," Evelyn said, having a brief flashback to the last years of her human life, "thankfully I know that has changed. I got in trouble regularly for breaking dress code because I shortened my skirt and it showed my calves, as if that's really provocative. Well-I take that back it was very provocative for the time-but still." "You know there might be a dress code here, right?" Marco pointed out. "Yeah, and what're they gonna do, call my mom? Put me in detention? Oh I'm so scared." Evelyn said, rolling her eyes, "I looked this school up and found photos of students in class and whatnot, trust me dress code is very loosely enforced here. I think there was an article about a mom who sued the school for sending her daughter home and won a ridiculous sum of money so now the teachers just don't say anything as long as you can't see anything you wouldn't see in a PG movie."

"I've never been to school..." Emilie admitted, unlocking the door and letting them into the house. "You may need to help me fit in..."
