"Alright, I'm giving both of you a crash course in high school," Marco decided, sitting down on an armchair facing the living room couch. "The basic rules are 1) don't be that kid, don't remind a teacher if they forgot about homework, don't call someone out for being annoying unless they're bullying someone in which case it's best to help the person out. Although, sidenote, don't take on anyone you can't handle and remember that a lot of times they have backup. Also under don't be that kid, don't always talk about one thing or you'll be 'the horse girl' or the 'fantasy football guy' or whatever your thing is and remember that however you act in the first few days is pretty much your identity and you'll have trouble changing it later so if you dress really goth you're gonna be the goth until you graduate. It's important to gauge other people and react accordingly, you don't want to stand out too much but you want to be noticeable. 2) Don't sit down until you've talked to the teacher and the bell has rung, even in classes without assigned seats everyone tends to have a personal favorite spot, wait until everyone is seated to figure out where to sit. 3) Don't try too hard, don't memorize every pop culture term and use them obsessively because nobody does that, they may occasionally make references but it's not as big of a deal as people seem to think. You do not have to make extra effort to connect, often times if you don't know something people will be excited to explain it to you. Those are the most basic basics I can think of, mainly just act like you would regularly and you'll be fine. Oh-one more thing, you have to ask to go to the bathroom or to get water and you should raise your hand to talk, students are generally not treated as adults. Any questions?"

"Seriously? I have to raise my hand and ask permission to go to the bathroom?" Emilie scowled. "What the hell for?!" This 'school' thing sounded less and less fun with every word out of Marco's mouth. Not treated like adults indeed? She'd barely been treated like anything else all her life. For all her upbringing in the QA, Emilie was discovering just how painfully little she knew about life on Earth. She knew some facts, of course, and many languages, but not much about what life was actually like. "What if I already know loads of it?" She asked eventually. "I mean, I have a perfect memory, and the QA had me studying loads about Earth. Did you know it's one of, if not the, most paralleled world? There are more Earth parallels and variants than most other worlds that the QA visits put together!" She thought on this for a second. "I probably shouldn't mention that, should I..."

"Don't mention anything about the QA or other worlds or magic or anything," Marco said, "and as to education just play dumb, don't upstage the teachers even if they're wrong. Just shut up an do the work." "That shouldn't be too hard," Evelyn said, leaning back, "I rarely paid attention in class back when I was in school the first time around so why should I start now?"

"But what if they are wrong?" Emilie asked, genuinely not understanding. She couldn't fathom how explaining why the teacher was wrong would be a bad thing. It would be educational, surely. But she heard the thought clear as day in Marco's mind, sighed and said no more about it. "Lunch?" She asked, looking at the clock on the wall. "I don't know what we have, but I'm sure there's something yummy around here- Oh! Mrs Christiansen's baking!" Emilie dashed to the kitchen without another word. She reappeared with a large tupperware box filled with brownies, munching happily on one. "HQ doesn't do stuff like this!" She grinned, passing the box around. "We should spend some time coming up with stories and anecdotes today, so that we've got some tomorrow, just in case."

"Alright," Evelyn said, taking a brownie and also a bowl of goldfish from the pantry, "I've got some choice embarrassing stories about Marco that we should share." They spent the rest of the afternoon snacking and making up stories before Evelyn made a pasta dinner and they all went to bed.
The next morning Evelyn woke up to the sound of her alarm and rolled over to turn it off, miscalculating the size of the bed and falling onto the floor. Half awake, she stumbled into the bathroom to shower and fix her hair. That done, she got dressed, put on makeup, and knocked on Marco's door to yell at him wake him up-something she knew he wouldn't have done by now.

Emilie leapt out of bed and dressed, consciously replaying Marco's instructions in her mind. First impressions were going to be important, so what should she wear? Eventually she appeared downstairs in some of her less colourful clothing to get breakfast. She was too tired to bother considering that normal people didn't pour themselves cereal and milk without touching anything. She'd have to check herself on that when she was out and around normal people.

"Alright, everybody ready?" Evelyn asked, not waiting for an answer as she got into the car. They got to the school with little difficulty and parked in the visitors parking lot. The building itself looked nice, probably built within the last half a century, and the students looked like they were mostly pretty affluent. They joined the crowds of people headed inside and made their way to the principal's office.

"Ah!" He said as they were shown in "You must be the new lot. Welcome to our school." They were given a general welcoming speech, complete with a handful of the most important rules and other useful information, before being taken to their new classrooms. Emilie had music first thing on Monday mornings, and had decided she was going to be a weird one. Not so weird that she stood out, but weird enough that she would draw attention from anyone looking for something a little bit magical. She was made to introduce herself to the class and tell them something about herself, so she mentioned casually that she lived with Eva and Marc and no adults. An excited chatter followed as she took her seat near the front -the better to lip read- and she knew the school would be buzzing with the information by the end of the day. Three new seniors had turned up and were living on their own. She could feel the idea of 'house party' oozing out of everyone's minds. Once class had started Emilie feigned concentration and, somewhat distractingly, balanced her pencil on its point, and her eraser on top of it. It wasn't long after she'd answered "piano" to the question of what instrument she played when she heard an interesting thought. Someone had noticed her balancing act, and had decided to keep an eye on her. This would be something to tell the others at lunch. Now she just had to wait for whoever it was to come and talk to her about it.

Evelyn's first class of the day was chemistry. The teacher was a petite brunette woman with crazy hair and matching clothes. She introduced herself as Eva and was instructed to sit at a lab table with three guys who had been annoying the teacher. "Maybe you can keep them in order, regardless they need to be separated," she said distractedly as she pointed the table out to Evelyn. Evelyn nodded slightly and went to take her new seat. One of the guys whistled softly and winked at her. She winked back and sat next to him. "I know that whistle and wink were because you think I'm an intelligent and have a great personality," she said, taking out a notebook and pencil. "Yeah, sure," the guy said, "I'm George." "Well George, it seems we have chemistry together," Evelyn said, barely managing not to laugh at her own pun, "I'm Eva." "Cool, so where're you from?" "I'm from New York originally," Evelyn said, remembering her bio's extensive list of addresses, "but I've lived all over the country." "Your parents have some sort of weird job?" He asked. "I'm legally estranged, my friends and I live together, we've been shelter-hopping," Evelyn explained. "Wait you live alone? Like without adults?" One of the other boys butted in, leaning across George (much to George's annoyance), "That's sick." "Yes, yes it is," Evelyn said, smiling, "there's nobody to tell us what to do or what not to do, if I come home at 2am Marc and Ellie, my housemates, don't care at all." "Bro." The guy who wasn't George said. Evelyn smiled and nodded. This was going to be fun.
Marco's first class was art. The teacher introduced him to the class as Max even though he corrected her three times and told him to sit at the back with a bunch of football guys who were just taking the class for credit. They seemed incredibly interested in the living alone thing and he knew that they would have to throw a party within the week. The class was pretty remedial but it was fun and he learned quite a bit about football and how to get girls according to these guys. The teacher kept glaring at them but never told them to be quiet. After class one of the guys suggested Marco try out for the team and Marco said he'd consider it. His next class, calculus, went much differently.

Emilie's second class was psychology, and the teacher had great fun getting the class to guess things about her based on how she introduced herself. Emilie was less amused by this and dug into his memories to 'guess' at things about him, purposefully getting a detail or two slightly off. "Close, but I'm afraid that happened when I was twelve, not eight." He said once she was finished, and the room as a whole was so impressed that he excused her impertinence and gestured her to her seat. Some of the class had already heard about the three new seniors living without adults, and a whisper followed Emilie around the room as she sat down. This lesson was somewhat less enjoyable, as the boy sitting on her right kept trying to infer what she was like and what had happened in her childhood -if he only knew!- to make her act as she did. She eventually stunned him into silence by telling him something so personal about his own past that he spent the rest of the lesson analysing himself, trying to fathom how she'd known. She realised, with some irritation, that if she kept this up she'd have to find a way of explaining this ability. By the time a girl asked her about it as they were leaving the classroom she had it worked out. "I'm a bit deaf," Emilie explained "so I got really good at reading people." "You don't act like you're deaf." The girl countered. "I lip-read. Plus, I wasn't born deaf. I don't need to be able to hear you to know what you're saying." And that, thankfully, was the end of it. Emilie looked down at her timetable with a sigh, wondering what in the world was coming up next.
